PROVIDING 25 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE BEREAVED 1988-2013


Patrick Vernon Dean, M.Ed., CT, is the founder and director of the  

Wisconsin Grief Education Center (WGEC) since 1988 where he works   

with clients on issues related to grief, loss, and healing. He currently is  

an instructor at Marquette University, and taught for their  

Certificate in Grief Counseling program. Dean is also the director of  

Grief Education Services for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee/Cemeteries  

division, working at six Milwaukee area cemeteries. He serves as a  

Critical Incident Stress Debriefer (CISD) for police, fire, and  

emergency medical personnel and formerly served as a specialist with  

the district attorneys Crisis Response Unit in Milwaukee, providing  

on-scene crisis intervention to families following homicide and other  

violent crime. He also serves as a consultant to the Milwaukee Police Department POST (Police Officer Support Team), and is a volunteer event photographer for the Alzheimer’s Association. Dean is also an on-call volunteer providing bereavement photography services to families experiencing neonatal loss and NICU teams at area hospitals in

southeastern Wisconsin.


He holds a certificate in Death Education from the National Center for  

Death Education and Counseling in Boston, MA and a certificate in

trauma counseling from UW-Milwaukee. He also holds national certi-

fication from ADEC in Thanatology: Death, Dying, and Bereavement.

Dean is co-author of the Instructors Guide to Death and Dying with

Lynne DeSpelder and Al Strickland, and also collaborated with

psychologist Alan Wolfelt, Ph.D., on Healing the Bereaved Child,

providing hundreds of photographic portraits of kids to support Dr.

Wolfelt's text. Dean was also involved in supporting the workers and

management in the aftermath of the tragic explosion at Falk Corpora-

tion in Milwaukee, and has spent 2 years working with the commu-

nity of Crandon, WI following their tragedy when six teens were murdered by an off-duty police officer.

As a consultant to the Boys and Girls Clubs, Dean created the first  

rapid response, crisis intervention Green Team in Milwaukee.  

Other training clients include the Milwaukee Police Department  

Training Academy, hospice, schools, support groups, parishes, funeral  

homes, communities, and private practice clients at the WGEC.


The year 2013 marks Dean˙s twenty-fifth year in service to bereaved  

individuals, families, and communities. When not working with the  

bereaved, Dean is an award-winning freelance photographer

specializing in weddings, portraits, ballet, and nature imagery.
